Robert Cotterell (born in 1847) was known as ‘Bluecap’ or ‘Captain Bluecap’ during a short but energetic career as a bushranger in the Riverina district of New South Wales. Cotterell suffered from severe ophthalmia and wore a cloth to protect his eyes from bright sunlight (hence his alias). Bluecap and his gang were active during the latter half of 1867 in the district west of Young known as ‘The Levels’ and further south in districts along the Murrumbidgee River. Cotterell, alias Bluecap, was captured and tried for armed robbery in April 1868. He was imprisoned in Parramatta Gaol and released in 1874.
